Silt forcing marina to move

The closest marina to Las Vegas must move because as Lake Mead's level drops, silt from the Las Vegas Wash is engulfing the docks.

The Las Vegas Bay Marina has less than 90 days to remain where it is if there are no flash floods in the Las Vegas Valley, officials said after a meeting July 18.

Lake Mead's elevation was at 1,158 feet on Wednesday, National Park Service spokeswoman Karla Norris said.

The marina, owned and operated by the Gripentrog family since 1957, is surrounded by 52,000 pounds per day of silt dumped from Las Vegas Wash, owner Betty Gripentrog said.

"Having been in this location for 45 years, we do not want to leave Las Vegas Bay, but we have no other alternative but to move," Gripentrog said.

The National Park Service and marina staff are working to find an alternate location for the marina.
