Letter: Reporting hasn’t been balanced
Tuesday, April 30, 2002 | 8:53 a.m.
We have been inundated with news on bad priests -- and rightly so -- but what has been noticeably lacking is balanced reporting on the fact that less than 300 priests over many years have been accused and not all yet proven guilty out of over 46,000 priests in the United States alone.
And out of several hundred violated children, how about the millions of youth who have not been attacked by the priests? I would challenge the news media to cover this story as well as write a probable cause of similar problems in our public schools, other similar-sized religious organizations and other groups serving children. Sure, let's get rid of the rotten apples, but how do you think the good apples feel with the one-sided feeding frenzy that has already impacted not only the Catholic religion but also a great nonprofit such as Catholic Charities, which does a tremendous job.
We already have so little support for the few nonprofits doing charitable work for the needy in Las Vegas that it is a national shame on us, so let's not kill it by the unbalanced news reporting. News media, do you have what it takes to cover the other side of the story, or isn't it dicey enough? Balanced reporting could help us think community is a place where hard-working people live.
