Man dies in three-car crash

A Las Vegas man died in a three-car accident about 10 p.m. Friday at Eastern and Reno avenues, Metro Police said.

Keith Karpie, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a passenger in a 1996 Dodge pickup that entered the intersection from the right-turn-only lane while the traffic signal was red, police said.

The pickup struck a 1995 Dodge two-door sedan. The truck then rolled over onto a 2002 Ford that was southbound on Eastern. Neither of the two people in the Ford was injured.

The pickup's driver, Jonathan Courtright, 24, of Las Vegas, and the sedan's passenger, Jenea Emery, 18, of Orderville, Utah, were taken to University Medical Center Trauma Unit. Emery was listed in critical condition today. Courtright was released Saturday.

Another passenger, Christine Olsen, 17, of Las Vegas, received minor injuries.

Listeria suspected in several brands

Las Vegas grocers have been alerted to a national recall of hot dogs that may have been contaminated with listeria, a bacterial infection that can cause serious birth defects and fever and muscle aches in adults.

The Clark County Health District said the recall is for 12-ounce packages of chicken and pork hot dogs produced by FMV Serve 'n Save with a May 14 expiration date; Rath Black Hawk, also with a May 14 date; Peyton's with a June 13 date, and Rodeo Franks with a June 13 date.

Also being recalled are the following with "EST. 296" in the Agricultural Department inspection mark: 16 ounce package of Tops Franks bun length hot dogs with a May 14 date; 16-ounce Wilson Farm bun length franks with a May 14 date; 10-ounce John Morrell Foodservice Black Label Gourmet Beef Franks with a date code of 064; and 16-ounce packages of John Morrell Bun Length Franks with a May 14 date.

Man, woman die in accident

A man and a woman died in a traffic accident about 5:15 p.m. Saturday in North Las Vegas, police said.

The Clark County coroner's office today identified the victims as Domingo Monzon-Sosa, 40, of Las Vegas, and Cecilia Danial, 45, also of Las Vegas.

A red Toyota Camry with two adults drifted in front of a silver GMC Suburban occupied by two adults and two children in the 900 block of Cheyenne Avenue, police said.

Danial was pronounced dead at the scene. Monzon-Sosa, who was driving, was taken to University Medical Center and pronounced dead at the hospital, police said. Passengers in the Suburban had minor injuries.

Cause of death of man unknown

Metro Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found Saturday morning off Lake Mead Boulevard near Lake Mead.

The body was found about 10:45 a.m., and the cause of death was not known, police said. The Clark County coroner's office said today that the badly decomposed body has not yet been identified.

Parole officer facing charges

A felony charge has been filed against a state parole and probation officer who ran up $1,939 in personal calls on his state-issued cell phone.

Deputy Attorney General Thom Gover said today that Royal Paul Bradley, who has resigned from the state job, is due in Justice Court in Las Vegas May 7 for his first appearance.

The criminal complaint said Bradley made 286 personal calls from Aug. 16, 2001 through Jan. 13, 2002.

If convicted he faces a maximum term of five years in prison and a fine of $10,000.

One man killed, another wounded

A 21-year-old man was killed and another man was injured Sunday night in a drive-by shooting in North Las Vegas.

A police officer was in his car writing a report near 3301 Civic Center Drive near Cheyenne Avenue about 10 p.m. Sunday when he heard several shots, North Las Vegas Police said.

The officer saw the two men shot. One died from his injuries and the other was wounded in the leg. The slain man was from North Las Vegas, but his name was not released this morning pending the notification of his family.

Police found the car used in the drive-by, but the car had been reported stolen and the suspects had fled, police said.
