Letter: Off-road group is irrational

Monday, April 29, 2002 | 8:56 a.m.

Launce Rake does a fair job in his April 2 story, "Businesses unite in wilderness coalition," and sums up the mentality of the off-road community when he quotes Don Dayton's equation of the land in Clark County being "as untouched by the hand of man as the ladies of the Mustang Ranch."

Without fail, every time a member of the off-road community opens his mouth, we get a clearer perspective of their irrational rhetoric. Their unwillingness to review the facts of the Citizens' Wilderness Proposal is proven by Dayton's statement. By the way, Dayton is a member of Southern Nevada Off Road Enthusiasts, which in February was suspended from racing on BLM land due to 8 of 14 violations at a race outside of Laughlin.

Does anyone really believe what these guys say about the value of "untouched" land? We, as residents of Las Vegas and Clark County, need to support the same efforts as these businesses and hear the ranting of the off-road folks for such as it is: ignorance.
