Metro officer in car chase ID’d

Friday, April 26, 2002 | 10:59 a.m.

The Metro Police officer who hit a fleeing suspect with a police car Tuesday was identified as homicide Detective Sheila Huggins, and the search and rescue officer who shot at the suspect was identified as Officer Ernest P. Brown.

Daniel Martinez, 41, is accused of leading officers on a chase that started near the Meadows mall parking lot Tuesday about 1:30 p.m. and ended after a carjacking and several accidents.

Brown shot at Martinez when he saw a woman being carjacked. The shot missed the suspect, but hit the vehicle, police said.

Martinez then crashed the vehicle into a block wall a short distance away. He was able to flee the wreck, but Huggins saw him running across Washington Avenue and struck him with her unmarked police car.

Martinez was taken to University Medical Center and was in the hospital's detention ward this morning in fair condition. He was booked in absentia on several felony charges and was wanted locally on drug and fraud charges. He was also wanted in Alabama on drug charges.

A department Use of Force Board will hear the case to determine if the actions of the two officers were within Metro policy for deadly force.
