Arbor Day celebration set

The city of Henderson will host its annual Arbor Day celebration at 10:30 a.m. Friday in front of the Henderson Convention Center, 200 Water St., featuring Deputy Drip, Ronald McDonald, Woodsy the Owl, and McGruff the Crime Dog.

There will be a tree-climbing demonstration, a color guard presentation by Basic High School's Junior ROTC, an Arbor Day play performed by the school's drama club, an the naming of winners of this year's Arbor Day poster contest. Each student who attends will receive a tree in a one-gallon pot.

Henderson Mayor Jim Gibson and Henderson Councilman Andy Hafen will address the significance of Arbor Day. Call 565-4264.

Learn about snakes and birds

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers hikes, walks and programs free of charge, but reservations are required. To make reservations or for more information call 363-1922. Some upcoming programs:

"Strippers Trail," a five-mile moderate hike Sunday with Jack for an excursion into Indian county.

Learn more about "Rattlesnake Myths," on a two-mile moderate hike Monday.

Explore your creativity with color "Through an Artist Eye II," a program offered Tuesday. Bring your choice of pastels, charcoal or watercolors.

Also, learn about the birds you can see at Red Rock when Pam Nickels of the Red Rock Audubon Society presents the slide show "The Birds of Red Rock," at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Visitors Center's Friends Room.

33 local homes to be renovated

The Rebuilding Together with Christmas in April group presents its ninth annual event Saturday.

Thirty-three homes will be renovated as part of this year's project, which brings together corporate volunteers and needy homeowners to provide safe and secure housing, and provide home repair to low-income elderly and disabled.

Fight Night, Job Fair are planned

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, County Commissioner Yvonne Atkinson Gates and North Las Vegas Mayor Michael Montandon will be hosting two events this weekend at the Nevada Partners Culinary Training Center.

The first is "Fight Night," which will include a celebrity boxer who will be a special guest and a participant in various boxing events from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday.

The second event is the seventh annual Southern Nevada Enterprise Community Career Day/Job Fair 2001 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, with training sessions and computers available to residents to complete resumes and get access to various websites to seek employment positions.

Both events will be held at the Nevada Partners Culinary Training Academy's parking lot, 710 W. Lake Mead Blvd. For more information, call 455-5025.

Spring Mountain Rehab,

2701 N. Tenaya Way, Suite 290, will host a free educational program and screening at 9 a.m. Wednesday to educate participants in identifying types of anxiety disorders, on how to deal with stress and anxiety, and about local resources available to assist in dealing with these disorders. The Nevada Commission for National and Community Service

Inc. is accepting applications for AmeriCorps programs that strengthen communities and organizations by using service and volunteers to support homeland security. The deadline for AmeriCorps State programs is Wednesday, and the deadline for AmeriCorps National, Special Volunteer programs and RSVP programs is May 8. Call 423-1461.

The Alzheimer's Association

presents Traveler's Companion at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the North Las Vegas Library, 2300 Civic Center Drive, a program that focuses on the Alzheimer's Association of Southern Nevada -- its services, resources and how it meets the needs of an ever-growing population.
