Former referee Lane recuperating in N.Y.

Wednesday, April 24, 2002 | 8:52 a.m.

Former Reno judge and boxing referee Mills Lane, who had a stroke last month, is continuing to show improvement in his rehabilitation at a suburban New York hospital.

Lane continues to increase his vocabulary and is on the verge of walking without assistance, Washoe County District Attorney Dick Gammick said Tuesday.

A sure sign of improvement is that Lane, known for his love of poker, is playing the game with his sons Tommy and Terry.

His sons attend school near Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, N.Y., where Lane is recuperating from the stroke suffered at his Reno home on March 31.

The stroke affected the 64-year-old Lane's speech and resulted in mild weakness to the right side of his body.
