B of A settles Vegas manager’s discrimination suit for $420,000

Tuesday, April 23, 2002 | 11:21 a.m.

Patricia Flick, a former Bank of America manager in Las Vegas who claimed she was called "excess baggage" by her boss and fired at age 59 because of her age and gender, agreed Monday to settle a discrimination lawsuit against the bank for $420,000, court records show.

Bank of America had offered in February to settle the suit for $500,000, with $350,000 distributed to Flick and $150,000 to her former attorney, Larry Johns, for fees and costs.

But in Monday's settlement, the bank agreed to pay Flick $420,000. Flick's attorneys declined comment on whether the $420,000 includes legal fees and on the distribution of the settlement between Flick and her current and former attorneys.

Flick, a former manager at a former Bank of America office at Boulder Highway and Charleston Boulevard, sued the bank in U.S. District Court in December 1999, alleging it rejected her request to be reassigned after the Boulder Highway office closed in April 1998 and instead awarded a manager's position to a male employee under 40.

Flick, who said Bank of America district manager Bruce Daly described her as "excess baggage," also accused him of imposing "unreasonable and impossible demands on her to belittle, humiliate and denigrate her in the eyes of her employees and force her to resign."

Daly was also accused of trying to trick Flick into resigning by giving her verbal assurances that she would be taken care of by the company's benefit program. Flick alleged his intention was to prevent her from raising her discrimination claims.
