Goodman likes Nellis general for manager

After alluding to him for weeks, Mayor Oscar Goodman says his top choice for city manager is retiring Nellis Air Force Base Maj. Gen. L.D. Johnston.
Johnston has been Goodman's top choice for the post since Virginia Valentine announced her resignation effective May 31. Goodman is waiting to hear if Johnston is interested in the position. He said he's asking Johnston to consider the job as a "personal friend"
Councilman Michael Mack suggested Wednesday that the council determine the best way to search for a candidate, either a state or national search, but Goodman pushed aside the need for one.
"Nobody's better than this guy," Goodman said.
Johnston, who was out of town today and could not be reached for comment, retires from the Air Force on June 25.
Goodman has had several meetings with other potential candidates, including political consultant Terry Murphy -- who passed on the offer -- and former lobbyist Rose McKinney-James. Deputy City Managers Betsy Fretwell and Steve Houchens have also expressed interest in the position.
Goodman said his choice is no reflection on the deputy city managers, who he says are completely capable of taking over the position.
"(The deputies) are wonderful, and they would work well with this man," Goodman said.
The council will ultimately decide on who should succeed Valentine.
