Murder suspect receives bail but held on immigration charge

A Las Vegas man accused of killing his wife in December 2000 has posted $350,000 bail, but he won't be getting out of jail anytime soon.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Ed Kane said a federal judge Wednesday refused to let Vitaly Zakouto out of jail because he faces immigration-related charges.

Zakouto, 53, is not only accused of shooting and stabbing Marina Cannon to death, the former Israel resident is accused of lying on immigration forms about the number of times he's been arrested, Kane said.

Kane said he was concerned federal authorities would release Zakouto from the North Las Vegas jail because Zakouto was able to post bail in the murder case over the weekend and was released from the Clark County Detention Center.

"I think he'd run if he got out," Kane said. "Plus, he's alleged to have murdered his wife and the witnesses against him are her kids and I was scared for them, too."

Kane maintains Zakouto stalked his estranged wife for months before climbing through her father's kitchen window in the middle of the night Dec. 23 and killing her.

Marina Cannon had a restraining order against Zakouto, and was reportedly so frightened of him that she installed surveillance equipment in the home she shared with her father, prosecutors say.

Prosecutors believe a videotape shot between 2:40 and 3:44 a.m. Dec. 23 shows Zakouto climbing over a wall, pulling a screen off a window and crawling into Cannon's home.

Zakouto is scheduled to go to trial in September.
