Letter: Let’s hear it for our song
Thursday, April 18, 2002 | 9:01 a.m.
It was great seeing Glen J. Gillette write about our state song in his April 11 letter, "State song inspires pride." I agree with Mike O'Callaghan, Ruthe Deskin and Gillette that Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt has many other important matters for the state, and that she should leave our song alone.
I am a native of Las Vegas, born and raised here for 78 years. When I went to the "Old Fifth Street" grammar school we always sang the song (but Colorado River replaced Truckee River).
One time in 1990 I traveled to a game where UNLV was playing Arkansas. We landed in Tulsa and took a bus to Fayetteville, Ark., and someone on the bus said, "Does Nevada have a state song?" They all yelled, "Ask Amelia," and I sang the song, and arriving at our destination we were all singing "Home Means Nevada."
