State sues Andersen over loss

Wednesday, April 17, 2002 | 11:25 a.m.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal filed a lawsuit Tuesday against Enron accountant Arthur Andersen for its alleged role in the state trash authority's loss of $220 million in a failed deal with Enron Corp.

The suit accuses Andersen of fraud, negligence and recklessness in its audit work for the failed Houston-based energy trader.

"Andersen's failures resulted in the serious misrepresentation of Enron's financial condition," Blumenthal said. He said officials at the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority relied on Andersen's "wrongful representations" when entering into the ill-fated deal with Enron.

The lawsuit, which has long been threatened, comes as U.S. Justice Department officials near a settlement with Andersen in the Enron case that could be announced as soon as Wednesday.
