Letter: Nevada Power takeover needed

Wednesday, April 17, 2002 | 8:50 a.m.

Since Nevada Power did not get its way with the holdup it was trying to perpetrate, it's in the news almost every day.

I have yet to see where the company has suggested any serious cost-cutting measures, such as firing the wonder boys who made all of the great decisions last summer or ordering minimum 10 percent pay cuts for all executives. Or how about eliminating all executive bonuses until they catch up with what they claim to have lost last summer?

What I hear and read lately tells me that they have probably outlived their usefulness as a "public" service provider. While I abhor bumbling bureaucrats managing most things, at least they would not be motivated by bottom-line greed.

Let them go belly-up and let the state, the county or the city take over. They could retain a large number of the workers and none of the executives, and we would all be much better off in a short period of time.

I don't know what the best word is to describe Nevada Power's latest round of threats, but extortion comes to mind!
