Letter: Keep porn on Strip from children’s eyes

Wednesday, April 17, 2002 | 8:50 a.m.

Recently I visited Las Vegas, and was pleasantly surprised at how family-oriented your city is. Many of the hotels have fun centers and amusement rides as well as shows geared toward families.

As I walked down the Strip, though, the surprise that I had initially felt about the city left me. Corner after corner, I began to notice rows of "newspaper" stands, all containing pornography with pornographic pictures displayed in the stands' windows.

I'm all about free speech, but is it really necessary literally to litter the streets with T and A in a manner that is eye-level to children? If Las Vegas wants to promote itself as a family-friendly city, could it at least be a little more discreet about porn and not display it on every street corner for kids to see?
