Letter: Jobs are answer, not marriage
Wednesday, April 17, 2002 | 8:51 a.m.
Regarding President Bush's effort to link welfare and marriage, it is exactly what I would expect from right wing politics. To think that getting married would get women off of welfare is incredibly masochistic, considering that means all of your troubles would be done away with if only you got yourself a man.
I think women in that position are there because of a man. If the woman did have a true man, he would be there supporting her and her kids instead of letting them fend for themselves in a work world that holds men more superior and pays them more.
Don't get married unless you fully plan to be a loving couple and loving parents. The key to getting out of welfare, poverty, and low self-esteem is jobs, plain and simple. You want to help people strive and have a better life? Give them a job, then they can focus on finding the better things in life.
So President Bush wants to spend $200 million for this project and he wants the states to come up with an additional $100 million? Then give these people a job. That is the first step in solving these problems. Marriage, from what I thought, was meant for love, not money.
