Three burned, one critically, in Reno kitchen fire

Tuesday, April 16, 2002 | 9:27 a.m.

Rokeya Chowdhury, 59, suffered second- and third-degree burns over 75 percent of her body and was reported in critical condition at Washoe Medical Center, city spokesman Steve Frady said.

She was heating a pan of cooking oil on the kitchen stove when the oil overheated and caught fire, Reno fire investigators said. She tried to move flaming pan, but spilled the burning oil down the front of her dress, causing the fire to spread.

Her son, Aftav Chowdhury, 36, also suffered second- and third-degree burns to about 18 percent of his body, including his face, hands, arms and upper torso. He was being treated at the medical center, but his condition was not immediately available.

Her husband, Asgar Chowdhury, suffered minor burns as well, but was treated and released. His age was not known.

Fire damage to the apartment at 1070 Maddux Avenue was confined to burned carpet and smoke damage to the ceiling and walls in the kitchen, fire officials said.
