Six doctors apply for new malpractice insurance

Six doctors applied for the new state medical malpractice insurance Monday, the first day a state-backed association offered the service.
The Medical Liability Association of Nevada received just six applications for malpractice insurance Monday, but an Insurance Division official expects more doctors will apply for malpractice insurance through the newly launched association later this week.
Representatives from the Medical Liability Association's management company, American Governmental Risk & Insurance Programs (AMGRIP), told state officials that in addition to the six applications, they received approximately 20 phone inquiries Monday. The association was created after several commercial insurers pulled out of the state, threatening doctors with lack of coverage.
Problems with AMGRIP's website prevented some doctors from downloading applications, said Bruce Heffner, chief insurance assistant with the state Insurance Division. Those problems were resolved, and officials expect to see more applicants later this week.
