An Oregon police department assistant chief was hired Monday as the new North Las Vegas Police chief.

Paresi was assistant chief of operations support with the Portland, Ore., Police. He has 28 years of law enforcement experience, officials said.

Paresi was picked from three finalists.

Former Chief Joey Tillmon announced his retirement last October and stepped down at the end of that month. The department is currently being headed by acting Chief Joseph Forti, who did not apply for the permanent position.
