Two die, one hurt in crash
Two people died and another was injured in a two-vehicle accident Sunday night.
A 22-year-old driver of a Ford Mustang drove over the center median of Las Vegas Boulevard South near Serene Avenue Sunday about 9 p.m. and into on-coming traffic, Metro Police said.
A Jeep Liberty Sport, driven by 36-year-old Christopher Rohland of Las Vegas, struck the Mustang as it came into his lane. The driver of the Mustang and a 49-year-old passenger died in the crash. Rohland was taken to University Medical Center and was in serious condition Sunday night, police said.
The accident is under investigation.
Cargo spills; highway closed
U.S. 95 remained closed this morning while the cleanup continued after a tractor-trailer overturned Sunday night spilling the cargo of paint and other hazardous materials onto the roadway.
Traffic was being diverted around the accident on Kyle Canyon Road and Lee Canyon Road, officials said. The highway is expected to be open by midday.
The accident happened about 10:30 p.m. Sunday on U.S. 95 about a mile north of the Las Vegas Paiute Indian Reservation exit. The truck rolled onto its side. The driver and a passenger, who was sleeping in the back of the rig, had minor injuries, officials said.
Nevada Highway Patrol troopers are investigating the cause of the accident.
Police probe shooting death
North Las Vegas Police are investigating the death of a man found lying on the sidewalk at Fifth Street and Orr about 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
The man died at the scene from an apparent gunshot wound. The man's identity was not released this morning.
Anyone with any information is asked to call Secret Witness at 385-5555 or the North Las Vegas Homicide Bureau at 633-9111.
Man missing after boat accident
A Las Vegas man, 54, is missing and presumed drowned in a boating accident that occurred on Lake Mead about 4 p.m. on Saturday, the National Park Service reported.
The accident occurred near Callville Bay, about 30 miles northeast of Las Vegas, when the man was thrown out of a boat he was operating while crossing the wake of another boat.
A search continued until dark without finding the missing man. The Nevada Division of Wildlife and the Park Service are investigating the accident.
Weather Service issues advisory
The National Weather Service issued a high wind advisory for today.
Meteorologists are predicting winds from 25 mph to 35 mph with gusts reaching 50 mph to 60 mph primarily for this afternoon.
Sunday's high temperature of 95 degrees tied the record for the same date in 1947. Today's high was expected to reach about 80 degrees, due to the wind from a cold front pushing through Southern Nevada from the Pacific Northwest.
Mother charged with child abuse
A 21-year-old Las Vegas woman will be arraigned April 23 on a murder by child abuse charge.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Doug Herndon said a Las Vegas justice of the peace Thursday found there was enough evidence to try Tiffany Clay in the death of her 7-month-old daughter, Arial Matthews.
The baby died as the result of a skull fracture last month, Herndon said.
Clay told police she was taking a nap on the couch when her 4-year-old son woke her up to tell her the baby wasn't breathing, Herndon said. When she checked on the baby, she observed head injuries.
Clay said that before she took her nap, the baby had slipped out of her car seat but appeared to be fine, Herndon said.
The 4-year-old boy is living with grandparents, Herndon said.
Clay remains in the Clark County Detention Center in lieu of a $100,000 cash bond.
New attempt at law to be made
The state attorney general's office says it will try again in 2003 to get a law passed that would stop telemarketers from calling Nevadans who object to the calls.
"We receive lots and lots of complaints," says Deputy Attorney General Kathleen Delaney.
A bill was introduced in the 2001 Legislature to create a registry for those who do not want to receive telephone solicitation. But the legislation was amended with exceptions for a variety of businesses and died.
