Letter: Adults teaching kids to jaywalk

Monday, April 15, 2002 | 8:49 a.m.

Jaywalking is being taught to children by adults. I was going north on Nellis Boulevard and while stopped at Owens Avenue, watched as a woman crossed the street to catch a bus. She yelled at children with her to hurry up. Fortunately, drivers in all directions halted to watch this parade. The woman did not go back to help the children cross -- after all, her intent was to get on the bus.

Almost every day I watch adults with children cross streets and weave in and out and around cars a few feet from the regular crosswalk and light. Sometimes they cross in the middle of the block such as Nellis with cars whizzing by. I have never seen any of them stop and tell the children to look in both directions before crossing. They are teaching the children how to get injured or killed.

Perhaps the adults do not know how to cross a street or come from a country or town where there is no traffic. Sure, it is the drivers who must watch out. It is the driver who will suffer if a child has been injured or killed when an adult doesn't care enough to teach children the rules. How about adults setting an example for children?
