Computer glitch responsible for delinquent-tax notices

Thursday, April 11, 2002 | 11:12 a.m.

The Clark County treasurer's office is preparing apology letters to thousands of taxpayers who earlier this week, due to a computer error, received notices that their property tax payments were delinquent.

County Treasurer Laura Fitzpatrick said the computer program had not processed all of the tax payments that were due March 4, even though they had been dated and posted. The computers then spit out delinquent notices that were mailed to between 15,000 and 20,000 taxpayers.

"An error in the program wasn't caught in time and it resulted in taxpayers getting a letter they shouldn't have," Fitzpatrick said. "Computers do what the programs tell them to and it wasn't picked up. We certainly didn't do it on purpose."

Fitzpatrick said most of the payments that were not picked up by the computer were made through mortgage companies and submitted in large files. She said mortgage companies were inundated with phone calls Tuesday when most property owners received the notice.
