North Las Vegas on Tuesday narrowed its search for a new police chief to three finalists, all out-of-town police executives.
City Manager Kurt Fritsch is expected in the next week or so to name the new chief to take over the position left open when Joey Tillmon announced his retirement in October.
The finalists are John J. Comptson Jr., deputy director of Dayton (Ohio) Police; Mark S. Paresi, assistant chief of Portland (Ore.) Police; and James S. Spinden, Washington County (Ore.) sheriff.
Five candidates were interviewed Monday and Tuesday by two boards -- one made up of city employees and the other of local police officials, said Brenda Johnson, North Las Vegas spokeswoman. The boards decided on the three finalists.
The department is currently headed by acting Chief Joseph Forti, who did not apply for the permanent position.
The salary for the new chief will be between $80,936 and $119,092.
