Officer settles for $15,000

Wednesday, April 10, 2002 | 10:46 a.m.

A Metro Police officer who claimed he was transferred after accusing other traffic investigators of showing up at accident scenes while under the influence of alcohol has settled his lawsuit against the department for $15,000.

Detective Timothy Babcock was almost midway through his trial with Metro when the settlement was announced, U.S. District Judge James Mahan said.

Babcock had also alleged that while he was in the fatal-accident detail he saw fellow investigators put in for overtime to which they were not entitled.

Babcock contended that his First Amendment rights were violated when he was transferred to another traffic unit as punishment for giving a statement to Metro's Internal Affairs Bureau last July. His pay also was decreased by 8 percent, he said in his suit.

Attempts to reach Metro's attorney, Peter Angulo, and Babcock's attorney, Frank Cremen, were unsuccessful.
