Saturday event set at community school

"Super Kidz Day," an event designed for children to have fun, will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Lied Community School, 5350 W. Tropical Parkway.

Activities include a Frisbee toss, Hula-Hoop contest, shoe toss and more.

Every child will receive a participation award, and ribbons will be presented to winners, followed by an ice cream sundae social. Admission is free. Call 229-4733.

Free programs on tap for visitors

The Nevada Division of State Parks offers programs, hikes and other visitor services free of charge. There is a $5 entrance fee per vehicle. For more information call 875-4141. Some upcoming programs:

A talk and demonstration on the "Santa Gertrudis" breed of cattle, will be from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday in Spring Mountain Ranch State Park's main corral in the parking lot. Owner Dean Hawkins will talk about breeding, feeding, halter breaking calves and more.

Also at the park, "Desert Wildflowers," a program at 1 p.m. Sunday, will be presented by rangers who will identify plants and talk about adaptations in the desert on this easy to moderate hike.

Walk will benefit Humane Society

Pulte Homes will host its sixth annual "Wag-A-Tail, Walk-A-Thon," a two-mile fun walk, at 8 a.m. Sunday at Hills Park in Summerlin, to benefit the Las Vegas Valley Humane Society.

The proceeds from the event will be used to provide shelter, food, medical care and low or no-cost spay and neuter services for animals in Clark County.

Celestial viewing planned on Saturday

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers hikes and walks free of charge, but reservations are required for all programs, which begin at the Visitors Center. To make reservations or for information call 363-1922. Some upcoming programs:

The Las Vegas Astronomical Society will present a slide program and celestial viewing from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday.

"Trail Talk," a program featuring short presentations on all the trails in Red Rock by staff member Gina.

KCEP radio will present

its third annual Talent Contest & Showcase at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Cashman Center Theater, 850 Las Vegas Blvd. North Tickets are $10. Call 631-5443.

Members of the Las Vegas Fire Departments

will hold a benefit hockey game against Metro Police at 7 p.m. Saturday at Sante Fe Station to benefit the Hemophilia Foundation of Nevada and the Make A Wish Foundation. Admission is $7. Call Timothy at 229-5911.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary,

Nevada Division of Wildlife, National Park Service and the Las Vegas Bay Marina are hosting "Boating Safety Awareness Day," from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Las Vegas Bay Marina. The event will feature boat safety, alcohol awareness, anti-theft programs and on surviving in the desert. Call 565-9111.
