Mediator sought in dispute

Tuesday, April 9, 2002 | 11:10 a.m.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. -- A court-imposed deadline for the state and Northern Arapaho Tribe to resolve their differences over gambling on the Wind River Indian Reservation passed Monday without an agreement.

Both sides plan to ask U.S. District Judge Alan Johnson on Wednesday to appoint a federal mediator to resolve the issue.

A lawsuit filed by the tribe last year claims the state has not negotiated in good faith to allow more types of gaming on the reservation.

Johnson ruled that casino-style gambling, lotteries and slot machines are not open to negotiation because they are illegal.

Johnson ruled that sports gambling must be negotiated because state law allows that type of gambling.
