Williams sued over filing fines

SUN CAPITAL BUREAU

CARSON CITY -- Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa has sued Assembly Speaker Pro Tem Wendell Williams, D-Las Vegas, to get him to pay a $3,800 fine for failing to file campaign documents.

Williams did not return phone calls for comment on the District Court suit filed in Carson City Friday.

The suit "follows repeated warnings and a commitment on the part of Assemblyman Williams to pay the fines by an extended date," Del Papa said.

Civil suits are pending against 18 other political candidates in the 2000 election who did not submit their campaign contributions and expense report or filed them after the deadline.

Senior Deputy Attorney General Kateri Cavin said 22 candidates have paid their fines; seven are making payments and 12 are still under investigation.

While the Legislature has tightened campaign spending laws, this will be the first time in at least 20 years that lawsuits were filed against tardy candidates.
