Letter: Las Vegas could easily go solar
Monday, April 8, 2002 | 9:04 a.m.
Most of Las Vegas' electric power comes from burning coal, the world's dirtiest fossil fuel. The greenhouse gas emissions from burning this fuel are causing global warming, which causes drought, floods, melting of polar ice caps and climate instability.
We have seen terrible suffering and starvation due to drought and floods -- environmental refugees in Afghanistan wandering homeless due to drought, having eaten the last of their seed; dying children in Guatemala with bellies bloated due to starvation. We read every day about loss of species and melting polar ice.
As a former resident of Las Vegas, I can verify that Las Vegas has enough sunlight year-round to power its casinos with clean solar power, and there are many government incentives to help purchase the power. One or two days' casino revenues could buy enough solar power to last for 30 years.
Have a heart, Las Vegas, and go solar. Show the world that you care!
