Labor election set

Monday, April 8, 2002 | 11:13 a.m.

The International Association of Machinists of Aerospace Workers filed a union election petition with the National Labor Relations Board to represent mechanics at auto dealer Courtesy Imports in Henderson.

The Machinists are in a recruiting drive targeting nearly 5,000 Las Vegas-area mechanics it claims are underpaid compared to their unionized counterparts in California,

Machinists Local 744 represents 9,000 mechanics in California and targeted 139 Las Vegas-area auto dealerships, repair stations and trucking companies in January.

"We'll be making sure our employees know what the union can or can't do and that the union's real motivation is to find a guinea pig so they can get a foothold in Las Vegas and recruit members," said Rob Bekken, Courtesy's attorney.

A hearing is set for April 16 to determine the composition of the bargaining unit.
