We have seen terrible suffering and starvation due to drought and floods -- environmental refugees in Afghanistan wandering homeless due to drought, having eaten the last of their seed; dying children in Guatemala with bellies bloated due to starvation. We read every day about loss of species and melting polar ice.

Nevada's McIntyre WAC baseball player of week
McIntyre, a senior from Elko Grove, Calif., hit .538 (7 (13)- in three games last week against Hawaii, driving in one run and scoring four. His six consecutive hits stretched over the first and second games to help raise his season batting average to .278.
Editorial: A tough, but right, decision
As so often happens in domestic violence cases, the woman recanted her original story and now says she was the aggressor and that she was stabbed accidentally. To allow for a jury to hear, at least secondhand, what the woman had originally said and to learn how terrified she had acted immediately after the incident, prosecutors sought to force officials at Safe Nest, a local domestic violence agency, to turn over the name of the victim advocate who had assisted the woman. Safe Nest refused and Cherry agreed.

Paul McCartney invited us into his old digs Friday night, piping in the nose-tickling odor of incense and parading a collection of strolling performers -- contortionists and balloon-carrying acrobats and the like -- through MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Editorial: Donna's House fills important new role
The house is named for Donna Hernandez, whose ex-husband in 1999 murdered her in front of her 3-year-old daughter. The main room of Donna's House displays a large portrait of Hernandez with her daughter. It's a reminder of the tragedy that family disputes can cause. A flash point for tension is during exchanges, and the promise of Donna's House is that such exchanges won't be flaring up and causing more tragedies.

While some of these people were down on their luck, others were either obviously mentally deficient, to the point that they could never be gainfully employed. Still many others refused to give their names. When asked why not, many replied that they were wanted by law enforcement in other cities; some admitted to being felons. Some at the soup kitchens would not go into a shelter because they could not take their drugs with them.
Guinn vetoes Yucca dump
