Sun Athletes of the Week: Chris Bonnell and Amy Sauer
Thursday, April 4, 2002 | 10:54 a.m.
Male Athlete of the Week: CHRIS BONNELL
School: Centennial
Class: Senior
Sport: Baseball
Last week: Bonnell, the Bulldogs' star third baseman, went 10-for-16 with two doubles, a home run and four RBIs and scored eight runs to lead the Bulldogs to a 5-0 showing and the title at the Blazer Spring Bash. Bonnell reached base in 15 of his 20 plate appearances, drew four walks and did not strike out in the three-day tournament. "He's one of the hardest-working kids on the team, if not the hardest worker," Centennial coach Charlie Cerrone said. "He's a battler at the plate who puts the ball in play and rarely strikes out. He has a good approach to hitting."
Female Athlete of the Week: AMY SAUER
School: Centennial
Class: Senior
Sport: Softball
Last week: Sauer tossed three complete game victories to lead the Bulldogs to the bronze division title at the Fred Davison Memorial Tournament. Sauer struck out 16 batters and allowed just one earned run in her 21 innings of work, helping her team to wins over West Hills (Calif.), University (Calif.) and Silverado. In the championship game, she limited the Skyhawks to three hits in a 1-0 victory. "I'm most impressed with her performance on the mound against Silverado," Centennial coach Cyndi Castro said. "Her maturity was there and her confidence was there."
