Park money to fund firefighter memorial

Thursday, April 4, 2002 | 9:26 a.m.

The city of Las Vegas will use money planned for future park projects to advance funds for a firefighters memorial at a park on West Oakey Boulevard.

The council on Wednesday approved a budget of $250,000 for the memorial, which includes a contract with the artist, granite materials, plaques, and engineering. About $50,000 will come from park funds that were earmarked for soccer fields at the Community College of Southern Nevada. Once plans for the soccer fields fell through earlier this year, the money reverted to the city's park fund.

Councilman Michael McDonald said the total cost for the project is intended to be reimbursed to the city by private donations. Nearly $6,300 has been received by private companies, including Albertson's and Wal-Mart. McDonald said fund-raising will likely be enhanced once the project is built.

City staff will sign an agreement with John Banks, a Las Vegas firefighter who will design and construct the memorial. Banks will build the nine-foot memorial to fallen firefighters as the centerpiece of the park at Oakey Boulevard and Redwood Street. He will be paid $60,000.
