Senior Rx waiting list grows

Wednesday, April 3, 2002 | 9:23 a.m.

SUN CAPITAL BUREAU

CARSON CITY -- A waiting list has grown to more than 600 senior citizens who want to enroll in the state's low-cost prescription drug insurance program for the elderly.

Called Senior Rx, the program reached its maximum number of 7,500 in March. The state then put a cap on it because of a limited amount of money. Jane Smedes, management analyst in charge of the program, said Tuesday the state is still taking applications, but nobody is being added, even if one of the senior citizens enrolled cancels a policy or dies.

Smedes said no one is being added because the state is waiting to see what the next payment will be from the tobacco companies. Senior Rx is financed by funds the state receives from the tobacco settlement. State Treasurer Brian Krolicki said the payment was originally predicted to be $50.7 million, but variables such as cigarette sales can affect the amount.
