Public can comment on paratransit plans

Wednesday, April 3, 2002 | 10:12 a.m.

About a dozen people turned out to a meeting of the Regional Transportation Commission to express their concern with a proposal to reduce service or charge more for bus service for disabled people.

The meeting was the first of six designed to gather feedback on the proposal to change the paratransit service. The RTC said too much money is spent to serve areas outside the region mandated by the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.

The ADA requires the RTC to provide service to an area of 278 miles in the Las Vegas Valley. The RTC provides service to a 511-square-mile area, well beyond the minimum required by the law.

The agency is studying two proposals: Reduce the current service area to the ADA minimum or charge an additional fare for customers traveling to or from destinations outside the area.

Comments can be mailed, phoned, faxed or emailed to the RTC. People can also submit comments at any of the public meetings on the issue.
