Mas Des Aveylans ‘00 Syrah

Wednesday, April 3, 2002 | 8:32 a.m.

The estate of Aveylans is located west of the Rhone River in the region called Gard, a microclimate perfectly suited to produce Syrah. Mas is an old Provencal word for farm. Syrah is one of the most noble of all-black grapes, and in the more famous prototypes, Cote-Rotie and Hermitage, the prices can be prohibitive. This wine is slightly astringent because it is still so young, but lay it down for two or three years, and the reward will be massive, a dense, fruity and beautifully scented wine that will stand up to even the gamiest meats.

Available at Marche Bacchus, $12.99.
