Mesquite casinos named in federal complaint

Monday, April 1, 2002 | 11 a.m.

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) filed a complaint Friday on behalf of the Industrial Technical and Professional Employees Union, charging the union lost an election to represent Randy Black Sr.'s three casinos -- Oasis, Casablanca and Virgin River -- in Mesquite because of Black's alleged unfair labor practices.

A hearing on the charges is set for June 27.

The union, which sought to represent 1,276 housekeeping, food and beverage workers in a National Labor Relations Board-held Election in December, said it was rejected by a vote of 640 to 464 because of Black's alleged threats to close the Oasis and Casablanca and notify the Immigration & Naturalization Service of alleged undocumented workers at the casinos if the union won.

The NLRB said three of Black's consultants threatened the casinos' workers in November with loss of wages and benefits and threatened to terminate them if they supported the union. The workers were also allegedly interrogated about their union membership and sympathies prior to the election.

Black's attorney denied the allegations.
