A 30-year-old man is in serious condition this morning after being shot by two Metro Police officers Saturday night.

Police said the man pointed a gun at the officers.

The officers had responded about 9 p.m. Saturday to a call about a man with a gun in the area of Oakey Boulevard and Las Vegas Boulevard South. Witnesses pointed out the man to officers, Capt. Dennis Cobb said.

The officers confronted the man and ordered him to put down his backpack. The man complied, but then pulled a handgun from his waistband, Cobb said.

"He initially had it pointed at the ground and the officers continued to order him to put it down," Cobb said.

Police allege the man raised the gun and pointed it at the officers. The two office at the him. The man was hit twice, police said.

He was taken to University Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition this morning. Police are trying to verify the man's name.

The two officers were put on routine paid leave. Their names will not be released for 48 hours.
