Letter: We must put aside our fears

Friday, Sept. 28, 2001 | 4:25 a.m.

We do not fly the airlines. We lay off 20 percent and 30 percent. We sell our stocks. Where is FDR to tell us we have only to fear fear itself? How can we have courage against the terror when our own government is hunkered down?

Now is the time for all good leaders to come to the aid of their country. If the people are to "live normally," elected officials must take the risks they ask of us. Open Reagan National Airport. Be seen in public. The only risk taker has been the much-hated Bill Clinton, who announced he would fly on several different airliners next week.

We could fly across the country for $25, but we don't because of fear. Where are our elected leaders? If Bill Clinton can do this when he has nothing politically to gain from it, then why not our Congress, our Supreme Court members, our governors, our mayors and our city council members?

Go to ball games and concerts. Fly to vacations. Ultimately there is no security. We all die; it's how we live that matters.
