Letter: New York mayor showed courage
Friday, Sept. 28, 2001 | 9:17 a.m.
On Sept. 11 our nation was attacked, this time in New York City. (The first time was on Dec. 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.) Also on Sept. 11 Washington, D.C., was attacked.
In New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and his staff were on the site as soon as possible, not looking at their own safety. All they were interested in was what they could do for the people at the World Trade Center.
But then the second strike hit. The staff said that they and the mayor had to leave the site because they were afraid that the World Trade Center buildings might start to fall, which they did, and many firemen and police were killed or missing. But as soon as they were immediately out of danger, the mayor called the governor of New York and told him what happened.
I may say Mayor Rudolph Giuliani showed his courage to New Yorkers and America. This man deserves a standing ovation from the American people.
One last fact: at Pearl Harbor we lost 2,388 in one day, while on Sept. 11 in the terrorist attack we lost to date an estimated 6,333.
