SUN STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS

NEW YORK -- Bill Gates is still a multibillionaire, but not quite as wealthy as he was a year ago.

The co-founder and chairman of Microsoft Corp. remained the richest person in the world, according to the annual survey by Forbes Magazine of the 400 wealthiest Americans.

The slowing economy was reflected in the declining worth in the rankings, which were released by Forbes on its website Thursday night. The magazine is scheduled to be on newsstands Oct. 1.

Super investor Warren Buffett moved into second place, followed by the other Microsoft co-founder, Paul Allen. Oracle chief executive Larry Ellison dropped from second to fourth.

The rest of the top 10, except for Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer, was a family affair, made up of relatives of deceased Wal-Mart Stores Inc. founder Sam Walton.

Casino gambling figures on the list are:

* No. 29 Kirk Kerkorian, who controls MGM MIRAGE, $5.3 billion

* No. 31 Carl Icahn, owner of the Stratosphere and two Arizona Charlie's in Las Vegas, $5 billion

* No. 110 Donald Trump, whose company has Atlantic City casino resorts, $1.8 billion

* No. 267 Sheldon Adelson, who controls the Venetian resort and its attached Sands Expo Center, $975 million

* No. 280 Ed Roski Jr., owner of the Silverton hotel-casino, $900 million

* No. 378 Bill Bennett, who controls the Sahara hotel-casino, $675 million
