Environmental impact hearing is scheduled

The Department of Energy has rescheduled a hearing on environmental impacts if a defense support project is moved from Los Alamos, N.M., to the Nevada Test Site, 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

The Test Site is one of four alternatives the DOE is studying to relocate its old Technical Area facilities from Los Alamos. The DOE prefers to keep the project in New Mexico.

The Technical Area at Los Alamos supports research and experiments on nuclear criticality. Nuclear materials become critical if a sustained chain reaction occurs.

The public meeting is set from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 11 at the National Nuclear Security Administration's Nevada Operations Office, 232 Energy Way, North Las Vegas. The facility is located off Losee Road.

The DOE had scheduled the original hearing on Sept. 13, but changed it after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
