Sun Athletes of the Week: Quintin Jones and Whitney Welch
Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001 | 9:36 a.m.
Male Athlete of the Week: QUINTIN JONES
School: Bishop Gorman
Class: Senior
Sport: Football
Last week: Jones rushed for 201 yards and five touchdowns on 20 carries, leading the Gaels to a 60-54 overtime win over Bloomington (Calif.) Friday night. Jones' final touchdown, a 10-yard dart up the middle, gave Gorman its lead in the extra session. He also scored on runs of three, 46, 21 and 12 yards. "He's so strong and so fast, if he can get into the secondary he's so hard to catch," Gaels coach Kevin Kent said. "He's a complete back -- he runs well, catches well and blocks well. He's also a starter on defense for us. He's just an all-around player."
Female Athlete of the Week: WHITNEY WELSH
School: Durango
Class: Senior
Sport: Golf
Last week: The state's defending individual champion helped the Trailblazers remain undefeated in 2001, medalling twice to help her squad to division wins over rival Bishop Gorman and Sierra Vista. On Monday, her 1-under 35 keyed a team score of 195, Durango's lowest of the season. Four days later Welch shot another 1-under 35 as the Blazers bested their team mark with a 192. "I feel like this is the best team Durango has ever had," Blazers coach Kathy Faber said. "Everybody's improved -- even Whitney and (senior) Erin (Andrews) -- and they're excited to go out there and play."
