LV union tries getting workers back on the job

Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001 | 9:40 a.m.

The Culinary Union will meet with its members tomorrow to discuss a plan that would reduce workers' hours through November in an attempt to alleviate widespread casino layoffs.

D. Taylor, staff director of the Culinary Union, said such a plan would have to be approved by each casino. If approved, all Culinary members at a property would take a reduction in hours through mid-November, or earlier if hotel occupancy rates rise above 80 percent for two consecutive weeks.

Taylor estimated 20 percent to 25 percent of the Culinary's 50,000-person membership have been affected by layoffs. "We're just trying to think of ways to get more of our members back to work," Taylor said.
