Benefit will honor chamber's Shalmy
The youth mentoring organization Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nevada will host a benefit honoring Pat Shalmy, retiring president of the local Chamber of Commerce, Nov. 3 in the Palace Ballroom of Caesars Palace.
The program will feature performances by magician Steve Wyrick and the Susan McDonald Band. There will also be silent and live auctions.
Tickets are $200 person and can be purchased through Kelly Stidham at 731-2227, ext. 438. Proceeds will go to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nevada.
New Mountain View Presbyterian opens
The Mountain View Presbyterian Church will hold a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony 3 p.m. Sunday at their new building at 8601 Del Webb Blvd.
The expansion of the existing building increases the size of the sanctuary and narthex and adds a chapel for smaller religious services.
The public is invited to the dedication ceremony, with tours being provided and refreshments served. Call 341-7800 for information and directions.
Volunteers needed for many duties
Community Action Against Rape is seeking volunteers for its hotline, speakers bureau and court monitor programs. It will begin training sessions for volunteer crisis intervention counselors Monday.
The four-week training class will prepare volunteers to help victims of sexual violence during crisis and afterward. All applicants will be interviewed and screened prior to acceptance.

Bereavement group to meet
Temple Beth Shalom has started a new bereavement group to help community members deal with the loss of their loved ones.
The group is led by Dr. Olie Thienhaus, head of the psychology department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
It meets 6:30 to 8 p.m every Thursday in the temple's library, 10700 Havenwood Lane.

Whittemore to be honored
The University of Nevada, Reno, Alumni Asssociation will honor attorney Harvey Whittemore as the 2001 Alumnus of the Year.
Whittemore, who currently works for the law firm Lionel Sawyer & Collins, will receive the Alumnus of the Year Award at a dinner Oct. 12 in Reno.
Whittemore is a 1974 graduate of UNR.
