Savvy wine buys: Edna Valley ‘99 Pinot Noir

Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001 | 9:14 a.m.

Last week we featured a Zinfandel from the Central Coast, and this week, it is the delicate Pinot Noir grape that has a starring role. The cool, mild climate and the excellent soil of the Edna Valley has produced this very Burgundian red wine, which is a cousin by ownership of the pricey and highly praised wines from Chalone. This is a light, fruity wine that still has weight, and one that compares favorably with most of the other central-coast Pinots, especially with regard to price. It's not too tannic, and the wine is wonderful with poultry or pasta. The nose has lots of flowery stone fruit, and the finish is robust and long on the palate.

Available at Lee's Discount Liquors, $17.99.
