Jaycees prepare for opening of state fair
Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001 | 9:33 a.m.
Officials of the Las Vegas Jaycees State Fair, which opens Thursday, say the event should offer locals a respite from the sorrow following the Sept. 11 terrorist acts in New York City and Washington.
However, fair officials are declining to comment on whether security will be beefed up this year at the four-day event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, 7000 Las Vegas Blvd. North.
"We are not discussing that, except to say that we have always had Metro Police and private security at the fair," Jaycees spokeswoman Theresa Manderyk said.
Tickets for admission are $6 for adults and $4 for children older than 5 and seniors. Children 5 and younger get in free. Tickets for the carnival rides are an additional $12 per person Thursday, $15 Thursday, $17 Saturday and $17 Sunday.
The fair is open 4:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Thursday, 4 p.m. to midnight Friday, noon to midnight Saturday and noon-10 p.m. Sunday. The admission price includes access to the 9 p.m. concerts -- Vixen on Friday, Ratt on Saturday and Louie Louie on Sunday.
The Animal Planet Rescue Expo, an 80-foot vehicle that since 1998 has saved the lives of more than 1,000 animals nationwide, also is included in the admission price Saturday and Sunday. The expo features special guests and events relating to protecting pets when disasters strike.
The Animal Planet Rescue Expo will be open noon-8 p.m. Saturday and noon-6 p.m. Sunday at the fair.
