Local mosques to hold seminars on Islam

Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001 | 8:48 a.m.

What does Islam teach about suicide? What are the main tenets of the religion? What are the main differences between American Muslims and Muslims from other countries?

Area mosques are offering educational seminars on Islam this weekend to answer these and other questions many Las Vegans have about the faith since the attacks in New York and Washington. The primary suspects in the terrorist attacks are Muslim.

"There are a lot of misunderstandings about Islam, and now it is very important to clear up those misunderstandings," Mujahid Ramadan, a Las Vegas Muslim, said.

In the aftermath of the attacks, Muslims and Arab-Americans have become targets for discrimination. But Muslim leaders nationwide have spoken out to assure that Islam teaches peace, not violence, and that they do not support the acts of terrorism.

The local Muslim community will hold four simultaneous seminars, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at four Muslim centers Saturday. Downtown: Masjid As Sabur mosque, 711 W. Morgan Ave., (702) 647-2500.

Southeast: Jami Masjid mosque, 4730 E. Desert Inn Road, (702) 433-3431.

Northwest: Masjid Haseebullah, 3799 Edwards Ave., (702) 395-7013.

Green Valley: Omar Haikal Islamic Academy, 485 El Dorado Way, (702) 614-9002.
