Editorial: Generosity’s spirit may be tapped again
Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001 | 9:02 a.m.
In a touching show of generosity, Las Vegans have dug deep into their pockets to donate large sums of money to aid the victims and the relief efforts in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. For that matter, Americans everywhere have shown how much they care, helping the victims and their families during this terrible time.
Even as the spirit of giving abounds, the fallout from the terrorism now is extending to the nation's economy -- especially hit hard have been airlines and tourism-related businesses. It's estimated that thousands of Las Vegans have been laid off by casinos, and if this keeps up it quickly will ripple through the rest of our local economy, causing a slowdown for other businesses.
Unemployment aid is limited, so that means local charities may be called upon to step into the void. The economic setback may be temporary, but in case the economy doesn't spring back soon, local charities could be strapped in how much they can offer. Las Vegans have been there before when local charities needed a boost to give people a helping hand, and we're confident they'll be there again.
