Letter: Slaying poor Afghans wrong
Monday, Sept. 24, 2001 | 9:06 a.m.
Words of wisdom come from unexpected places. Pat Buchanan is running around saying that we should keep the use of force to a minimum: to attempt extraction and then to leave Afghanistan. We have a moral imperative to not kill those poor people who live in their own terror in Afghanistan, Sudan and other areas throughout the Muslim world.
Some of the most crushing poverty and inhuman conditions is a way of life for millions of people in that region -- our poor live like kings by comparison. We must be mindful of that. No killing innocents! That includes in this country as well. Vigilante justice has no place in a free nation. We are a republic and must act like one.
