Letter: No amnesty for lawbreakers
Friday, Sept. 21, 2001 | 9:15 a.m.
We are being pressed again to grant amnesty to those who are in this country illegally.
Each time, our legislative representatives have said this will be the last time. Everyone should be opposed to rewarding lawbreakers for their illegal acts.
Illegal immigrants subject us to possible life-threatening diseases, contribute to the imbalance of payment between our country and theirs, and add many costs to our community.
If one really wants to see the damage the illegal immigrants cause, they should visit border towns between the United States and Mexico. They have suppressed wages and working conditions of the American worker to the point where they look like foreign countries compared to other towns within the United States.
I found it hard to believe that President Bush said that only illegal aliens "work at jobs no one else will perform." What he meant was that no one else would work the jobs at the wage rates the employers want to pay.
As long as responsible citizens of this country continue to assist illegal immigrants in skirting the law and allowing our elected representatives to grant amnesty to those breaking the law, there is no hope of ever keeping our country safe.
