Letter: Muslim leaders must condemn terrorists’ belief

Friday, Sept. 21, 2001 | 9:35 a.m.

It has been said that true Muslims do not condone the deadly terrorist attacks on New York and do not believe in violence. We do not question this.

However, I would like to plead with their religious and political leaders to take action to counteract the terrorists' belief that is giving a bad name to their religion. That is the belief that to commit suicide and kill innocent civilians will send them to "heaven."

For true Muslims not to question or counteract this wrong belief is also tantamount to condoning and encouraging the terrorist acts of violence and murder -- and also sending members of the suicide squads to more unwarranted killings and eternal punishment.

While it will be a monumental task, leaders of various religions should work in concert to implement a universal agreement to promote peaceful ways, focus on common ground, and address grievances and misunderstandings.
